Matthew Corey, CPA with LaPorte CPAs and Business Advisors, and Tammy Shiner, owner of Express Employment Professionals

Small business owners learned about the “Big Beautiful Bill” at a recent Small Business Council Lunch and Learn. Speakers Tammy Shiner, owner of Express Employment Professionals, and Matthew Corey, CPA with LaPorte CPAs and Business Advisors, explained how the new tax law affects local businesses.

The tax law brings major changes for small businesses. Corey explained that bonus depreciation is now permanent at 100% for equipment and vehicles purchased after January 20, 2025. The 20% tax deduction for partnerships and S corporations is also now permanent—both were set to expire in 2026.

Key Takeaways:

  • Watch purchase dates – Equipment bought between January 1-19, 2025 only gets 40% bonus depreciation
  • New tax breaks – Employees can deduct some overtime pay and tips on their personal taxes
  • Childcare credit boost – Business owners offering childcare can now claim 40-50% instead of 25%
  • Estate tax change – Exemption increased to $15 million per person for business succession planning
  • E-Verify required – Businesses must verify employees are legally allowed to work; fines start at $5,700 per violation

Shiner stressed the importance of proper employee verification through E-Verify, noting that compliance is essential for all businesses with W-2 employees. She also covered Medicaid work requirements, noting that nearly one-third of Louisiana residents use the program.

The luncheon gave business owners clear guidance on navigating tax changes and staying compliant with employment laws.
