There’s something different about living and working in Louisiana, and if you’re from here, you don’t need data to tell you that. You feel it. Still, the numbers back it up. Nearly four out of every five Louisiana residents were born here, one of the highest rates in the country. People don’t simply pass through Louisiana. We stay. We attract people from all over the world with our food, music, and culture.

That says a lot about who we are. We believe in our communities. We believe in our people. And whether we say it out loud or not, we believe in showing up for both.

In a world that has become increasingly digital, it would be easy to assume that community matters less than it used to. You can order what you need, promote your business, and connect with people without ever leaving your home. But here in St. Tammany Parish, that’s not what drives success. Business is still built on relationships. It is the familiar face you see at a local event, the conversation that turns into an opportunity, the person who remembers your name and your story. That kind of connection doesn’t happen by accident, and it doesn’t happen from behind a screen.

We all see the conversations happening online every day. The frustrations, the complaints, the posts about what could be better. It is easy to get caught up in that space, but the truth is, community is not built in the comment sections. It is built in rooms. It is built when people choose to show up, even when it is inconvenient or outside of their comfort zone. Whether it is a ribbon-cutting event, a networking event, or a local pop-up, those moments of presence matter more than we sometimes realize. Visibility leads to familiarity, and familiarity builds trust. Over time, trust becomes the foundation for both personal and professional growth.

The same idea applies when it comes to supporting local businesses. Choosing to shop small is not just a trend or a feel-good decision. It is an investment in the place you live. It supports the schools your children attend, the parks your family spends time in, and the overall growth of the community you are part of every day. Behind every small business is someone who has also chosen to build their life here. When you support them, you are strengthening the local economy in a way that has a real and lasting impact.

For many young professionals, the idea of a “village” looks different than it did in the past. Support systems are not always built into our daily lives the way they once were. Instead, they are created through connection and consistency. The people you meet at events, the businesses you collaborate with, and the relationships you invest in often become the network you rely on. In many ways, other small businesses and local leaders become the village you did not even realize you were building.

There is often pressure to think bigger, move faster, and look beyond where you are. Growth is frequently associated with expansion, but real, sustainable growth usually starts much closer to home. Before branching out, there is value in building something solid right where you are. When you take the time to establish relationships, build trust, and become part of your local community, you create a foundation that can support whatever comes next.

At the end of the day, it is easy to point out what is missing. It is easy to say what should be better. What makes a real difference is choosing to be part of the solution. If you want more connections, you have to be willing to create them. If you want stronger businesses, you have to support them. If you want a better community, you have to be present in it.

St. Tammany Parish does not grow because of one person or one business. It grows because people make the decision, over and over again, to show up. And that choice still matters.
